Learn how to care for the soil. Successful farmers use 5 tips to get a high harvest from their farms.
1. Soil testing: Experts test your soil once every year.
Soil testing helps a farmer know nutrients, pests, and diseases in their soil. This way, they’re able to plan what and how to grow
2. Crop rotation:
Successful farmers control the spread of pests and disease in their soil by growing different crops on a piece of land.
Planting one crop on the same land every season decreases nutrients in the soil and passes on pests & diseases that lower harvest.

Mulching protects your soil by holding water during the dry season. It helps to control weeds and prevents soil erosion.
Soil needs enough water for crops to grow healthy. Rainwater is not always available and so irrigation is necessary.
You can irrigate using watering cans, sprinklers, or through drip where water is taken to each plant through small pipes.
Drip irrigation prevents wastage because water is put on each plant in little amounts.
Using fertilizers that are certified by the Kenya Bureau of Standards increases harvests. Never use more than recommended.
For best results, apply fertilizer in holes, using your hand, watering cans, or by spraying. Always read and follow instructions.
Increase your harvest by testing your soil yearly, mulching, rotating crops, irrigating, and using certified fertilizer correctly.
Why is it important to rotate your crops every season?
1. To avoid soil tests
2. To have healthy crops
3. To avoid loss of water in your soil
Well done! Crop rotation controls the spread of pests & diseases leading to healthy crops which means higher harvests.
